Amid very little fanfare, Nokia has launched its Files on Ovi service in beta form as of this morning. The service uses a desktop connector application that allows a mobile internet-connected device to access files on a hoe computer securely.
The service includes a main web site hosted by Nokia that allows users to view and retrieve files from the home computer they connect to, transferring files with ease. The site also allows for file restrictions to be set so that you can provide temporary access to specific files to friends and family.
Files on Ovi can be enhanced by paying a monthly fee to Nokia for the Anytime Files service, allowing for storage of 10 or 30 GB (depending on the chosen plan) on a remote server with all files being accessible without the use of the desktop connector. Nokia is currently offering a 60 day trial of the 10GB package with a new sign-up.

Steve Jobs and Apple have announced the newest incarnation of the iPhone with a lower price tag, faster data speeds and updated firmware. Old iPhones will also be able to upgrade to the 2.0 firmware.
The iPhone 3G and its updated firmware offer upgrades like enterprise support and access to Apple's online application store. Support for Microsoft Exchange and VPN support will help the iPhone to bridge the gap between trendy consumers and business users. Added support on-board for iWork files such as Pages and Keynote presentation files to be viewed and edited directly from the phone adds to the already-supported Microsoft Office formats to make for a heavy duty file editor when needed. A few small but noteworthy changes are the ability to search your contacts, delete mail messages in bulk and parental controls for the teenage iPhone user with too much time on their hands. Battery life allows for up to seven hours of video playback and 24 hours of music playback.
All of this is not to mention the updated hardware on the new iPhone. Like its predecessor the new device will function as a quad-band GSM/EDGE device but now supports 850, 1900 and 2100 MHz UMTS/HSDPA as well. GPS is built-in and instantly adds real time tracking to the on-board Google Maps application.
Apple says the iPhone 3G will be available in over 70 countries by the end of 2008 with a price tag of $199 USD for the 8GB version and $299 for the 16GB version. The release date is July 11 in most countries, including the United States and Canada.

Martin remains confident that his plan will see the light of day and hopes that the issue will be present on the FCC docket for the major meeting in July.
