Canadian Cellular Landscape Changing
Oct 14, 2008 - 3:11 PM
With the Canadian cellular landscape quickly changing from only three major carriers to several coming upstarts with the recent spectrum auction, major CDMA carriers Telus and Bell Canada have announced that they are planning to co-develop a UMTS/HSPA 3G network as they pave the way for an eventual move to LTE for 4G. Rogers Wireless, the third major Canadian wireless provider, is already constructing its own UMTS/HSPA network with LTE on the horizon for that company as well.

The new network from Telus and Bell, expected to be launched in 2010, will effectively eliminate CDMA support in Canada though neither company has announced how long support for that support will be maintained following the new network launch.

Hardware providers Huawei and Nokia Siemens Networks are providing all networking equipment for the Telus/Bell endeavor.

Orange Drops Blackberry Bold 9000
Oct 10, 2008 - 3:37 PM
European wireless provider Orange has announced that it is immediately droping the RIM Blackberry Bold 9000 from its device lineup and retail store shelves following an apparent inability by RIM to provide a firmware update that addresses and resolves the many problems with the device. While neither Orange nor RIM have detailed the problems they are serious enough to prompt the second major action by a carrier this year; American provider AT&T scrapped plans earlier in 2008 to carry the Bold 9000 following long delays caused by lack of quality 3G performance.

The RIM Blackberry Bold 9000 is one of the latest smartphones to enter the market. It sports a large high-resolution display and is powered by the latest version of the Blackberry operating system. RIM has yet to release official word on a possible resolution via updated firmware.

Firefox Mobile Still Under Development
Oct 08, 2008 - 4:42 PM
After a period of several months with little word as to the progress of the upcoming Firefox Mobile web browser, an interview with the CEO of the Mozilla Foundation, John Lilly, has revealed that the company hopes to have an alpha test version of the software available to internal developers within only weeks.

With the mobile browser market only burgeoning now, offerings are few and far between, dominated by Internet Explorer Mobile (released as an included application with the Windows Mobile operating system) and Opera/OperaMini, a popular mobile version of the browser for the PC.

End-users shouldn't expect to see Firefox Mobile within the year but things are definitely on the go at Mozilla and a potential public beta could be just over the horizon.

Zune to Receive Windows Mobile Port
Oct 06, 2008 - 2:10 AM
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer confirmed in an interview yesterday that the industry speculation over a coming Windows Mobile 6 port of the company's Zune music software is on target. The Zune is Microsoft's foray into the terrority of the Apple iPod and its iTunes software; while it never came near to reaching the popularity of Apple's offering, users of mobile devices running WM6 will be happy to receive the robust software.

Microsoft's PlaysForSure DRM protection allows songs downloaded from the Zune marketplace to be played only on that device and this port will shift all playback rights to Windows Mobile as well, allowing users to transfer their music back and forth.

A date for the release of the port was not mentioned; we'll keep you posted as more details become available.

HTC "Rose 110" Passes Through FCC
Oct 02, 2008 - 5:54 PM
The American FCC has passed through an HTC device with the code name Rose 100, indicating that it may be available soon in the United States. While specifications listed in the paperwork are not nearly complete the phone will be compatible on at least the dual-band GSM frequency (850/1900MHz) and WiFi and Bluetooth will also be on-board.

Industry analysts are speculating that the Rose 110 could be the confirmed S740 from HTC, a device they announced this past August. While there is not currently a means of confirming or denying this information, the S740 sports additional features that include a 3.2 megapixel camera, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a large 2.4” QVGA LCD display. A candybar-style smartphone, the S740 will be shipping with Windows Mobile 6.1 at an unknown date in the near future.

Sony Ericsson Shows GreenHeart Concept Device
Sep 30, 2008 - 3:37 AM

While it is unlikely that this particular handset will ever see the market you can be sure that Sony Ericsson will be implementing many of the technologies in future hardware. More information should follow as the company makes an official announcement and we'll update you when they do.

Hong Kong Gets Unlocked iPhone 3G
Sep 27, 2008 - 2:35 AM
After fighting the possibility of unlocked devices through heightened hardware security and a crackdown on unlocking attempts, Apple has officially announced that it will be releasing an unlocked version of its iPhone 3G to the Hong Kong market for use with any provider. Also, unlike the Chinese version of the unlocked device, the iPhone release in Hong Kong will still offer full 3G capability and WiFi.

Pricing for the unlocked phone is steep at $5500 HK (approx. $700 USD) for the 8 GB version and $6200 HK (approx. $800 USD) for the 16 GB version. Potential buyers should note that the online market selling the unlocked iPhone states that you must insert your carrier's SIM before activating the handset via iTunes, sparking concerns that this will potentially lock the phone to that provider.

On a related note, Apple has released iPhone firmware version 2.2 beta 1 solely to developers through its software development kit program – no official word yet on the changes in this latest release.

HTC Touch HD Details Revealed
Sep 15, 2008 - 6:42 PM
After being mistakenly publicized on its official company web site, handset manufacturer HTC has officially launched for sale the Touch HD. Looking like it has been designed from the ground-up with Apple's iPhone in mind, the HTC Touch HD sports a large 3.8” 800x480 pixel display with full touchscreen capabilities along with haptic feedback. A sleek design and lack of hardware keys give it an iPhone look but things are much different under the hood.

Powered by Windows Mobile Professional 6.1, the HD Touch features a 528MHz processor and 288MB of dedicated application RAM, making program utilization an easy task on many levels. 500MB of internal system memory is offset with a high-capacity microSD card slot for up to 8GB of added storage space. A five megapixel camera is on-board along with full music and video playback capabilities so the extra storage space won't likely be wasted.

Connectivity options include quad-band GSM/EDGE along with UMTS/HSDPA (900/2100MHz) and HSDPA 3G. Standard WiFi and Bluetooth also come included as does a standard 3.5mm audio jack for multimedia fans.

The HTC Touch HD was originally expected to hit stores in Europe in Q4 2008 with availability in the rest of the world to be announced at a later day. Whether or not this early site listing will affect official release dates has yet to be seen.
